Can you take a mission trip in your own city?

A Recap from the Urban Forum @ Kingdom House

YES!  Last week 7 short term missionaries from St. John participated in the Urban Forum – a service immersion experience in the Near Southside neighborhood of St. Louis.  The team spent 4 days living in the AmeriCorps building in Soulard, learning from organizations including The Bridge, a sanctuary for the homeless and Kingdom House, an agency serving families living in poverty.  Participants worked alongside residents to address neighborhood issues and opportunities.  Activities included “walking a mile” in the shoes of a homeless man on the Bridge Walk, door to door recruiting residents of the surrounding housing projects to attend a town hall meeting , intentional study of new methods for poverty alleviation and engaging neighbors to decide a plan for a plot of donated land in the area.  The team gained new perspectives for how St. John can better serve our city by learning how to give a voice to the voiceless by working WITH residents rather than FOR them.  This team seeks to use what they’ve learned to empower residents in College Hill, St. John’s long time local mission field, to ignite change in their own neighborhood.
