We had an amazing day! Today was the first day we immersed ourselves into the daily routine at Stronghold. The morning kicked off with a devotion and worship songs. It was so incredible to see young, Cambodian children joyfully singing praises to the Lord, in English! That was our first glimpse into the amazing work being done at Stronghold. They were excited to be there and eager to learn.
Throughout the day, the children practiced their English by reading Bible verses about the good shepherd, singing songs, and playing games. We also helped them create Excel spreadsheets with charts.
In the midst of all of the learning, there were others working hard to prepare lunch and maintain the building. Every child was served a hot, delicious meal and was given the opportunity to grab seconds if they were still hungry. Lunch included a bag of "sweet," as referred to by the children, for dessert which consisted of a plastic bag filled with coconut milk and either corn or beans.
Maintenance tasks for the day included filling tires with concrete to serve as bases for tether-ball, patching areas of pavement with concrete, sealing and painting the restrooms, and power-washing the outside walls in preparation for the painting scheduled for later in the week. A few of the children even enjoyed placing their hand prints in the concrete at the base of the tether-ball poles.
The other highlight of the day was the beginning of Dr. Mike's dental clinic. Dr. Mike and his assistants helped fill cavities, extract, and clean the children's teeth.
It's amazing to see the work that God is doing in Sihounkville and the stronghold that this place is for the community. We look forward to continuing to build relationships with the children and their families while sharing with them the love of Jesus.
