Busy Days

The past few days have been VERY busy ones.

On Friday, I was able to accompany Naomi, SC’s field worker and Diane on home visits for many hours. Walking with and caring for whole families is a core value of SC; building relationships with parents and involving them in the educational process is key to the children’s ability to succeed. I’ve spent time in the homes of impoverished Cambodians in the past, but it’s always shocking to see the difference in the standard of living compared to the US or even the middle class here. However, the more exposure I have to seeing a different standard of living, the more I move from feeling overwhelmed by the needs to being impressed at the ingenuity that comes when resources are limited.

As I sat and watched Naomi and Diane discuss the progress of students with moms, dads and grandparents I noticed something very different than conversations I’ve observed in the past. The interactions were relaxed, and filled with proud smiles all around. Parents shared that their children speak their English at home and are excited to study. There were many thank you’s for the opportunity to attend parenting events at SC and for the opportunity to interact and share with other parents. Families are excited for future opportunities to learn and spend time together in community created at Stronghold Cambodia.

An important part of short term mission trips is experiencing the history and culture of the country where you are serving. All teams that arrive in Cambodia fly into Phnom Penh and visit S21 prison and the Killing Fields to be reminded or learn for the first time of the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge and the suffering of the Cambodian people. We also take many teams to see Angkor Wat and learn about the history of Buddhism and Hinduism in Cambodia. To date, we haven’t spent much time exploring Sihanoukville, where SC is located. Sihanoukville is located on the Gulf of Thailand, and is a popular spot for Australian and European tourists. There are many beautiful islands off the coast that are popular spots for relaxation. On Saturday, I had the tough job of doing some fact finding for future short term mission teams to experience the islands J  I think there is a good possibility that future teams can affordably enjoy some relaxation and post mission debriefs while enjoying the beauty of God’s creation on the islands.

Not a bad view for the afternoon

Worn out after a long day

I was so excited that we were able to join Pastor John at his church for worship yesterday morning. John has been a long time partner of St. John STMTs and was key in the planning and formation of Stronghold Cambodia. After church, John Rodewald from Mission of Christ Network, the agency responsible for placing Tim and Diane as long term missionaries at SC, arrived safely in Sihanoukville. In the afternoon, we were able to gather the ministry partners from the area together to share an update about SC and to talk a bit about next steps for all as partners in sharing the Gospel in Cambodia.

Today and tomorrow, Jesse and I will be working diligently with John Rodewald on how to tell Stronghold’s financial story (update our budget). He has years of experience working with ministries around the world to operate efficiently; we are incredibly blessed to have him here.  We ask for prayers that God helps us accomplish much as we work with John!
