Lee Anne Matthews
Lee Anne’s involvement in the theatre reaches from acting, directing and teaching to stage management and producing. While she is based in St. Louis, she travels often to work in regional theatres throughout the country.
She received her BFA in Theatre Performance from the University of Nevada, Reno (her hometown) and has received training in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York. As an Equity actor, she has performed in venues from Toronto to Tokyo and from Alaska to Florida. Favorites include a Vaudeville house in California, a Shakespeare festival in Alaska, and various Disney productions, both in Orlando and Tokyo.
She came to St. Louis in 2006 to perform in the highly successful Menopause the Musical at the Playhouse at Westport. She has since been nominated for a Kevin Kline Award and a Tampa Bay Theatre Award for Outstanding Performance in a Musical,(I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change/Into the Woods) and locally she has also worked for the Muny, Shakespeare Festival of St. Louis, New Jewish Theatre, St. Louis Actor’s Studio, Upstream Theatre, and many more.
As a theatre director, she has prided herself on telling old stories in new ways, adapting and interpreting a broad range of theatrical genres. In 2008 she started teaching theatre at the Center of Creative Arts, and she realized what a joy it is to share her passion with younger generations. In addition to classes at COCA, where she is also a key member of their highly successful Cocabiz program, offering arts-based training to business professionals, Lee Anne was the Director of Theatre at Crossroads College Preparatory School in the Central West End from 2011-2018. In 2014, she was honored with the Maryville University/Shakespeare Festival’s Teacher of the Year Award.
Lee Anne has offered her time and talents to several worthy organizations in the St. Louis area including Prison Performing Arts, the Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation, and the Show Me Arts Academy in Ferguson. She was most recently seen on stage in 2018 in the hilarious Church Basement Ladies at the Playhouse at Westport. Her recent directorial projects include Avenue Q at Westport, and Mary Poppins at the Ozark Actors Studio in Rolla, MO.
